CHAPTER ONE

Adhyaropa Darsanam—Vision of Superimposition

Verse - 9

अर्काद्यथाक्रमं विश्वं तथा नैवेदमात्मनः।

सुप्तेरिव प्रादुरासीद्युगपत्स्वस्य वीक्षया || ९ ||

From the sun the cosmos gradually (arose), not so; this (cosmos) is from the Self;

By His look (the cosmos) appeared at once, existing like (when arising) from sleep.

Sree Narayana Guru

Commentary

The sage declares that the cosmos appears all at once and not in a piecemeal graded fashion. He affirms what the Maitri Upanishad (VI. 32) declares, "Indeed, from Him, the Self, all breathing creatures emerge, all the world." The Bhagavati Purana says, "From Her (Sakti) all entities come forth." That is all, entities from a blade of grass to the planets and great cosmic systems.

A concrete example is given by the sage when he describes the appearance of the cosmos to be like what we experience when waking up from sleep. What is before us is a totality.

In the same way the cosmos emerged as a totality which is subject to transformation.
