Adhyaropa Darsanam—Vision of Superimposition

Verse - 8

भयंकारमिदं शून्यं वेतालनगरं यथा।

तथैव विश्वमखिलं व्याकरोदद्भुतं विभुः || ८ ||

This (cosmos) is fearful, void, just like a ghost town,

In like manner, the All-Pervading One wonderfully produced the entire cosmos.

Commentary

The remedy for this is beautifully described in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (IV.2.4): "But the self is not this, is not that. It is unseizable, for It cannot be seized. It is indestructible, for it cannot be destroyed. It is unattached, for it does not attach itself. It is unbound. It does not vibrate. It is not harmed. Indeed, Janaka, you have reached fearlessness."

When the Self is realized then the world becomes a wonderful magic show, full of relativistic displays, which is witnessed by the Self without attachment. In the Devi Bhagavata Purana, Sakti is the All-Pervading one and here is a description of Her functions: "She emanates the cosmos, She protects, She destroys what She protects at the end of the cycle; She it is who in Her three forms bewilders the cosmos; Brahma united with Her emanates, Vishnu united with her protects, Rudra united with Her destroys. She binds the entire cosmos and holds bewildered by the noose of illusive relativity. O King, by the firm noose of 'I' and 'mine', Yogis released from worldly attachments, wishing for spiritual freedom and seeking to be free, revere the beneficient Goddess alone, the ruler of the universe."
