CHAPTER FOUR

Maya Darsanam—Vision of Illusive Relativity

Verse - 10

करोतीति प्रकर्षेण प्रक्रत्यैव गणान् प्रथक् ।

निगद्यतेऽसौ प्रक्रतिरितीह त्रिगुणात्मिका ॥ १० ॥

So made pre-eminent as Nature, separate as the strands of nature,

This is communicated as Nature, thus here composed of the three strands of nature.

Sree Narayana Guru

Commentary

In this final verse Narayana Guru tells us that illusive relativity functions as Nature, operating through the three strands of nature, which are rajas (active-passionate), tamas (inert-dark) and sattva (pure-clear). The Devi Mahatmyam says, "You (Sakti) are Nature bringing all into manifestation through the three strands of nature."

The Absolute is beyond Nature, and the strands of nature, yet as the Niralamba Upanishad declares, "Nature is the energy-power of the Absolute." Illusive relativity is what causes the appearance and the disappearance of the relative world. It has a quality which is both wonderful and fearful. Illusive relativity is associated with the Goddess Sakti also known as Maha Maya, yet without introducing the Goddess, Narayana Guru has shown in this chapter the functioning of illusive relativity at various levels and his vision is in agreement with the spiritual texts of the Tantric, Yogic and Veda-Vedanta traditions.

The purpose of this chapter is to show the power of illusive relativity. The sage wants us to understand that this power is ever lurking in the background ready to spring out causing confusion. The mind itself causes confusion because of negative and positive willing. The person of yogic understanding goes beyond illusive relativity and even the mind. The Sivayogapradipika beautifully describes the person of yogic vision: "(He is) with all the senses and strands of nature removed, going beyond forms, stainless, peaceful, with becoming and non-becoming annihilated, he is said to be established in naturalness."
