CHAPTER THREE

Asatya Darsanam—Vision of Non-Truth

Verse - 6

मरीचिकावत्प्राज्ञस्य जगदात्मनि भासते ।

बालस्य सत्यमिति च प्रतिबिम्बमिव भ्रमात् ॥ ६ ॥

To a wise man the moving world is in the Self, shining forth like water in a mirage;

Like a reflection moving about is then also truth to a child.

Commentary

The moving world appears like water in a mirage, which shows its illusive and relative nature. It is the Self-Absolute which throws out this colourful changing world as the Tantraraja declares, "As She (Sakti) is inseparable from the Self, so Her energy-power is all-pervasive possessing an endless number of powers."

Only the wise man is free from the snares of the relative moving world, because of his yogic outlook. The Katha Upanishad (IV.1) vividly describes this: "The Self Existent One pierced the (sense) openings, therefore one looks outward, not within himself; a particular wise man, seeking non-death, inwardly saw the Self face to face."

Because of ignorance the child believes a moving reflection is true, like watching clouds reflected in a pool of water. Absolute truth is within and what is without is a reflection or a moving image of truth. We read in the Atmaprabodha Upanishad (verse 12): "At all times Truth shines in me."
