That which is the senses, mind, intuitive judgement, the five vital breaths, etc.
Then that emitted forth as the Supreme, is the subtle limbs of the Consciousness Self.
Commentary
In this verse the sage includes the senses, mind, intuitive judgement and the five vital breaths in the subtle limbs of the Consciousness Self. What is emitted forth as the Supreme or Higher, the transcendental as opposed to the immanent, is a very tenuous form of illusive relativity. The Consciousness Self is the same as the Inner Self described in verse 2 of the Atma Upanishad. The function is subjective, consisting of the mental and vitalistic as a form of illusive relativity connected with consciousness. In the Devi Bhagavata Purana the energy-power of illusive relativity is explained: "In all creatures there is energy-power with all its might, any being devoid of energy-power is like a corpse. This energy-power of consciousness is in all creatures, this is Her form."
The reason Narayana Guru says it is supreme is because it is in all creatures and is the highest conditioning factor. The Katharudra Upanishad (verse 25) declares, "Therefore the All Self of consciousness indeed shines forth from these creatures." The Mahavasishtha also says, "She (Sakti) is called consciousness, because She is the life of all who desire life."
